teaching with TT
Intro
Transart Institute (TT) offers postgraduate degrees in partnership with universities in the UK and EU, providing the academic, creative, and supporting components of the process, leaving the administrative oversight (degrees, transcripts, quality control, and accreditation) to larger institutions. TT currently has two such partners and a third in progress. TT advisors work with PgRs registered with all of these partner universities. You are engaged as an independent consultant with the Institute and are paid for every hour you work, with three months off per year. We keep paperwork to a bare minimum, but timely responses are essential to make that work.
YOUR ROLE
PgRs lead their project. Advisors guide and support their projects to achieve the milestones and their research agenda. Team members are colleagues. There is no hierarchy.
TRAJECTORIES
By the second month, PgRs commit to either an accelerated mode to build momentum and stay in sync with peers, or an extended pace with an additional year, depending on their unique processes and external obligations. You will find curricula for each degree and mode at the bottom of the Postgraduate Research page in the top menu bar.
The PhD is 3 or 4 years, and the MRes and PhD by Publication/Portfolio are 1 or 2 years. TT is committed to seeing our researchers through on time by keeping processes simple, minimal, and regular, with trimester-wide all-purpose check-in forms and monthly online sessions and meetings, interspersed with three Deep Focus months each year.
All PgRs attend a suite of nine monthly topical online intensive workshops, which include research development and a Sunday guest talk, followed by PgR-led research group meetings. The Sunday sessions are required for the duration of the PgR’s tenure with TT.
ADVISORY TEAM MEETINGS
As part of an advisory panel team, you meet monthly while we are in session—once a trimester as a team and once each in one-to-one meetings.
Choosing a fixed monthly time and date for the full team meetings is highly recommended; they take place in the first month of each trimester. PgRs will alternate meetings with individual advisors for the remaining two months. Meetings consist of one hour of discourse and up to two hours of prep, reading, reviewing the project, etc.
Deep Focus
To foster stretches of highly concentrated workflow for PgRs, faculty, and staff, the fourth month of every trimester is designated as a Deep Focus month. In April, August and December, the institute is closed. No meetings, deadlines or sessions occur.
ASSESSMENT
There are three milestones in every PgR's tenure: proposal, draft and thesis + viva. You will be invited to comment and sign off on the milestones and required research journal in the third week of the third month of the trimester in one all-inclusive online check-in form, which includes feedback on progress, sign-offs, invoice info, etc.
Additionally, one TT faculty member external to the team will assess the proposal, and two external examiners will assess the thesis by email. Once the thesis component is signed off, the public (if in person) viva will take place.
You will be invited to assess other PgR Proposals. Your team may request specific assessors, both internally and externally, to align expertise. You may also be invited to assess other TT PgRs proposals and provide a second opinion on an assessment or other progression matter.

Admissions interview + Advisor confirmations
Applicants will list in their Expression of Interest (EOI) submission advisors from our pool and occasionallhy additionally externally. All PgRs have a core TT faculty advisor plus a co-advisor. We will also make additional suggestions. You will receive their EOIs and confirm your interest and availability.
If you are core TT faculty, you will be part of the initial conversation and should let us know whether you believe the applicant is a good candidate for the programme and whether you would like to work with them.
If you are a new advisor or have not yet accompanied a TT PgR to completion, you may be invited to meet the PgR after they are registered, depending on schedules.
The admissions interview is a conversation between an applicant and two TT faculty members. Interviewers preview the EOI (Expression of Interest) form and meet via video conference to discuss the project at hand. Time permitting, logistical questions can be answered at the end of the 30-minute session, or you will send them to admissions@. Beyond determining whether the PgR and their project are a good fit for the institute and you as a potential advisor, the criteria for acceptance are as follows:
Independent thinking and Intellectual curiosity.
Ability to work autonomously, while appreciating the social aspects of research.
Interest in participating in the Institute's research community.
Motivation and commitment to their research project and the programme.
A clear grasp of the authors, practitioners and theories cited in their proposal.
An appreciation of relevant methodological issues.
An appreciation of the transdisciplinary potential of their research
An understanding of the scope, ambition, and feasibility of the project.
An appreciation of potential ethical considerations.
Consideration of potential impacts of the proposed project.
Insight into ways to make their work public.
Awareness of how their proposed project relates to.
In the last quarter hour, faculty will discuss their findings, literally check off the criteria met, and add their comments and conclusions to a brief online form. If you are currently consulting with TT you can add your admissions hours to your regular check-in form. Otherwise you will use the assessment check-in form. Advisor pool
If you are new to Transart, you will be invited to complete a profile form that will place you in the TT People Advisor pool. You can make adjustments and updates to the profile form at any time (in Forms). Once in the pool, other applicants with shared research interests will have the opportunity to request to work with you. See the Proposals post in this blog for details.
