The Smithsonian American Art Museum (SAAM) offers research fellowships supporting independent study of American art, craft, and visual culture. The programme welcomes research across historical and contemporary periods and provides access to Smithsonian collections, archives, libraries, and scholarly communities. Research should have a substantive relationship to American art, craft, visual culture, collections, or related fields.

OPEN CALL FOR GUEST EDITORS, PORTUGAL
Revista de História da Arte (RHA) invites proposals for guest-edited themed issues exploring historical and contemporary questions in art practice and theory with a particular focus on Portuguese narratives and discourses, and their global resonances and articulations. Published by the Institute of Art History at NOVA University Lisbon, the open-access journal welcomes innovative and interdisciplinary approaches across art history, artistic research, curatorial studies, and visual culture. Open internationally to researchers, academics, curators, and artistic researchers with expertise in a proposed thematic area. All contributions must be original and unpublished.

Culture Push's year-long Fellowship for Utopian Practice supports artists developing projects connecting artistic practice, civic engagement, and social justice. Operating as a testing ground for developing socially engaged ideas, the fellowship provides financial, logistical, and collaborative support. Projects must be grounded in an applicant's ongoing relationship with a specific New York City community or neighbourhood.

OBSERVATOIRE DE L'ESPACE / CNES, FRANCE
The French space agency's Observatoire de l'Espace invites visual artists to undertake a one-year artistic research project engaging with the cultural, scientific, material, or terrestrial traces of space exploration. Selected artists receive research support from the Observatoire team, assistance accessing documentation, connections with space-sector specialists, and access to scientific and technical sites.

PHOTOGRAPHY RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP, TORONTO
The Image Centre (IMC) at Toronto Metropolitan University offers six fellowships supporting original research using its extensive photography collections. Particularly, the Penny Rubinoff Fellowship, which explicitly accepts current PhD students, and the Howard Tanenbaum Fellowship for Artistic Research, is designed for artists conducting artistic research through the collections. Research can engage photography, archives, visual culture, material histories, and experimental approaches to photographic practice. Open to Canadian and international applicants.

APEXART – 2027–2028 NYC OPEN CALL, NEW YORK, USA
apexart invites 500-word proposals for original group exhibitions to be presented in New York City during its 2027–2028 season. Rather than requiring an established curatorial résumé, the open call focuses on the strength of the exhibition idea. Selected proposals are developed with apexart and receive an exhibition budget. The current NYC submission period runs throughout October. Open to individuals with a compelling group exhibition concept. Selected exhibitions receive a budget of up to US$10,000.

AMERICAN-SCANDINAVIAN FOUNDATION FELLOWSHIP
Support for Americans undertaking research, study, and creative arts projects in Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden, Greenland, the Faroe Islands, and Sápmi. Unlike many conventional academic fellowships, creative arts projects are explicitly included. In 2026, ASF awarded 31 American fellows more than $277,000 in total funding.

The Harry Ransom Center at the University of Texas at Austin will award approximately 50 fellowships supporting research requiring substantial use of its collections. Its holdings encompass art, photography, literature, film, performing arts, music, and cultural history, making the programme particularly relevant to interdisciplinary and archival practice-based research. Ten fellowships are specifically designated for doctoral dissertation research. Open internationally.
