This article attempts to combine heretofore disparate strands of thought into what can be called ecological musicology: that is, an effort to address all elements and players within the environment of a musical piece or performance. With examples from John Cage, Don Cherry, The Cat Empire, and Gyorgy Ligeti, I propose a means of accessing music to be pursued productively.
