This session will explore the question and definition of artist. Starting with the consideration of contextual factors that contribute to our understanding of the word, this exploration challenges the connection between artist and artwork as the sole link permitting its use. We will explore the foundation on which this conversation sits by leveraging Otto Rank’s views on appointment and self-nomination, opening the door to an exploration of artist identity outcomes, an artist’s personhood, and the process of individuation.
