Elena Marchevska

Elena Marchevska is a practitioner-researcher and Professor of Artistic Research at London South Bank University. Her research and artistic practice are interconnected and explore the intersection of gender, digital technology and the environmental humanities. She runs the boutique consultancy Back Row, that helps cultural and heritage organisations to improve ways of working and delivering projects, through co-creation and creative evaluation methods. Elena is also a world-leading expert on the impact of parenting and parental care on creative professions and has written extensively on this subject matter (see here). She is trained as an organisational systemic coach (Tavistock Trust) and Deep Listening facilitator.

To date, she has supervised 6 PhDs and 15 MRes/ MFA to completion, including practice research projects exploring topics such as diasporic tech communities, decolonial performance and film research on the ecological crisis. She is currently supervising 6 PhD students and would welcome the opportunity to explore the supervision of practice research in the areas of Performance/ Dance Practices, Digital/Postdigital Culture and Feminist/ Cyberfeminist epistemologies.

She has successfully secured funding for her work from the Arts and Humanities Research Council; the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada; Arts Council England; Horizon Europe and the GLA.

Practice Statement

Elena is working concurrently on three major strands of research:

  • Accessibility and critical interrogation of Generative AI and XR technologies: Elena is a Co-Leading on three research projects ( “ ADAPT-AI” Focal Doctoral consortium, funded by UKRI and AHRC- England (2026-2032) ; “ Enhancing Kinesthetic Empathy in Dance Audiences through XR Technology” , funded by SSHRC- Canada (2026-2028) and “Sound and Vision- XR technologies for Neuro-diverse users” funded by South East London Integrated Care Board) that explore and critically use the current integration of Generative AI and XR technologies to create immersive environments and interactive features that enhance the audience's engagement with the artistic work.

  • Maternal and Art practice: Elena is a world-leading expert on maternal art and the impact of parenting and parental care on creative professions. She has written extensively on this subject matter (see here) and is currently looking at maternal epistemologies within the digital sphere ( see here).

  • Deep Listening in data saturated times: Elena’s artwork is exploring isolated geographical systems (islands and islets) and their urgent response to the unfolding environmental crisis. She is curating a multi-year exploration with an interdisciplinary cohort of artists, writers and thinkers, on the island of Vis, that adopts auto-theory, deep listening and slow making. She runs workshops that explore how the co-existence of natural elements could offer mentorship for human orchestrators of cohabitation. Inviting participants into deep-listening, image work and creative writing practices outdoors, participants explore how remembering the ‘more than human’ past of Mediterranean islands might inspire their future.

Since 2021, Elena is co-hosting the podcast “Renewing the World” with Rachel Epp Buller and Charles Reeve that delves into creative explorations of care, time and mothering

Elena is a book editor of International Journal of Performance Arts and Digital Media and sits on the editorial board of Journal of Creative Research Methods.
