Angela Bartram

Angela Bartram is an artist, artistic researcher and academic. Her research, made individually and through collaboration, is made public through exhibitions, events and published texts. Bartram is Professor of Contemporary Art and Co-Lead for the Creative and Cultural Industries Academic Theme and Research Centre at the University of Derby. She is Trustee of the Board of Directors of the Live Art Development Agency and a member of the UKRI Talent Peer Review College; she completed the maximum tenure as Executive Board member of the Society for Artistic Research (SAR) (2018-2026) and served as elected Vice President 2024-2026; from 2020 a selected member of the CHEAD Research Alliance Strategy Group; an appointed Collaborations Champion for the National Centre for Academic and Cultural Exchange (NCACE) since 2021; and between 2017-2024 she completed tenure as Steering Group member of Contemporary Visual Arts Network East Midlands (CVAN EM), serving as Chair from 2019-2022.

Bartram has been appointed to serve on the national Research Excellence Framework (REF) sub-panel UoA32, Art and Design: History, Practice and Theory for the exercise in 2029 in recognition of her expertise in the field.  Bartram has a PhD in Fine Art and Visual Culture from Middlesex University.

Bartram’s research concerns thresholds of the human body, gallery or museum, definitions of the human and animal as companion species and appropriate strategies for documenting the ephemeral. The research is often made in collaboration: with other people, other animals, with materials and spaces. She is currently engaged in several interdisciplinary research projects concerning empathy: with people; with companion animals, with process and materials, and with the environment. This includes intergenerational, intercultural and interspecies research that incorporates data science and climate responsive methodologies.
